Warm Welcomes right across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Methodist District offer over 50 Warm Welcome Spaces in its churches and chapels. Many of them are based in small rural villages and are places where the whole community comes together. They have created a film to show the magic that Warm Welcome Spaces bring to communities right across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. What they have in common is that they are all safe spaces to pop in for a cuppa, a bite to eat and a chat.

Helen Pearce, Social Justice Coordinator, plays a leading role in coordinating the Warm Welcome Initiative across Cornwall. Introducing the film, Helen says:

In a world which is often online and virtual, many people can feel isolated and lonely. The Methodist Church wanted to host a place where people from all walks of life, of faith or of none, young and old, can meet together and gather together over a cup of tea. Warm Welcome Spaces are places of friendship and connection. They are places where you can meet new friends in the place where you live.

The Warm Welcome Hub at Carnon Down meets every Wednesday morning. The guests say:
“It’s at the heart of the community. It’s a place to keep up to date with all the news and what’s going on in the community, laughing, joking and enjoying each other’s company.”

The film shows the human warmth of connection and joy you will find in all the spaces, and it’s clear that demand is high! People coming together over a cuppa, a bowl of soup, or a bacon butty. As one guest says, “It’s a must, people look forward to it.”

St Day Methodist Church, Near Falmouth (and pictured above) has a cake stall, book stall to swap and borrow books from, a space for quiet one to one conversations, a prayer post box to post prayer requests and a team of about 10 people who help serve, by welcoming people as they come through the door. The team offers bacon butties, tea and coffee, and are there to chat with people, checking in on how they are doing.
