Warm Welcome Statement on today's energy price cap hike

Today’s Energy Cap announcement of a 6.4% rise will be devastating news to millions of Britons struggling with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. The new energy price cap will impact communities this April, at the same time as rises in water and Council taxes take effect. The combined impact will be especially hard on people who already have to make tough choices between heating and eating. With over 14.4 million people living in poverty across the UK, today’s news is hard to swallow.

David Barclay, Campaign Director of Warm Welcome, said:

“We know thousands of people who already struggle to heat their homes and pay for basic day-to-day necessities rely on Warm Welcome Spaces. Today’s news is deeply worrying. This energy price hike will hit households at the same time as increases in other utilities and taxes, and the triple impact will be devastating.

“I want to send a strong message to encourage anyone worried about the energy price cap rise to connect with their local Warm Welcome Space. These spaces are a lifeline to anyone worried about paying their bills and feeding their families.”

“We’ve already seen high numbers of people visiting Warm Welcome Spaces this year, an average of 120,000 people a week. And there’s been a huge increase in the number of Warm Welcome Spaces joining our campaign, with more than 1,200 new spaces joining us since October. Demand is growing at pace, and these spaces are becoming vital community hubs right across the UK, supporting growing numbers of people living in poverty.”
